roadmap Talk Words + Ideas: Simon Schama Simon Sc
hama’s first memory was of fireworks. For decades now he’s lit the blue touch paper of words and let them whizz, bang and pop, out loud and on the page. Now there’s a new book of writing, Wordy, every essay about food, art, politics and music; thoughts about past times and our times wrapped in a ribbon of words. His whole life has been this wordy adventure. Now come and join the trip on stage – from the post war estuary childhood, to London rock and roll, from sixties Cambridge to New York in the ashes of 9/11; from the intoxication of Shakespeare to the aggravation of the tweet. “Gasbag” his teachers called him in a desperate attempt to make him shut up. He never has. But then he’s the language animal and we’ve let him off the leash. National Concert Hall, Thursday June 6, €34.50 Talk An Evening with Bob Woodward Exhibition LCD Soundsystem Ruvan Wijesooriya first met James Murphy at a house party in the Lower East Side in 2000. Our first show was just…“Do you want to go to London and stay at a fancy hotel and play this weird show for free? You’ll get your airfare and your hotel room paid for and your drinks and maybe a dinner…” and we were like, “Fuck it, why not? I hate my job so let’s go!” Wijesooriya ended up documenting LCD on their spectacular rise, becoming their trusted go to man behind the lens and releasing a book about his time with them. Wijesooriya has collaborated with artist Joe Henry to create 11 paintings to go alongside the photographs and re-create LCD Pop Artworks in his own artistic language also. Open Gate Brewery until Thursday and Friday 5:30pm to 10:30pm and Saturdays 2pm – 8pm, €9 include a tasting paddle. Runs until June 22. The legendary American investigative journalist is best known for teaming up with Carl Bernstein and exposing the Watergate scandal which led to the resignation of President Nixon. A prolific writer on US current affairs, his most recent book Fear: Trump in the White House, proved to be a penetrating portrait of a sitting United States president in the first year of an administration. Tonight in the company of our most distinguished commentator Fintan O’Toole, Woodward will discuss the state of the US presidency. While this will largely entail preaching to the choir, Woodward will hopefully have some insights into whether the 23 Democratic candidates who have declared for the 2020 presidency can actually produce one capable of dethroning Trump.
