Q U A R T O QUARTO is an artist duo founded in 20
03 by Anna af Sillén de Mesquita and Leandro Zappala. QUARTO exists as an interdisciplinary platform. Based in Stockholm, they live between Brazil and Sweden, collaborating with other artists, researchers, academics and institutions devoted to research and development in the art field. Two trilogies have been produced by QUARTO since 2006. Each piece is independent and yet intertwined; they are all part of a long-term research work. The performance BEAUTY of ACCIDENT is the final part of the trilogy BEAUTY and has been developed into two new pieces: DURATIONAL ROPE and ROPE INSTALLATION. 2016 will bring the premiere of the new work KNOT BODY, which continues to explore the relationship between body and rope. This project is co-produced by MDT, Inkonst and the Cullberg Ballet (Life Long Burning). DURATIONAL ROPE: This work is a performative exploration lasting five hours, in which the artist duo QUARTO, using a kilometre-long rope, challenges the notion of what a body is capable of. Through constant motion, the bodies pull the rope in an endless flow, constructing and deconstructing shapes in the space – a physical exertion on the verge of the unbearable, gradually peeling away our notions of body and object, ego and drama.
