13 Spring 2017 The Pursuers It’s Midsummer in Sto
ckholm – a train is cancelled and a man has time to kill while he waits. With nothing to do, he starts to follow another man. They make their way through central Stockholm, until at a hotel café the man being followed suddenly unmasks his pursuer and calls him an amateur. Would he like to learn a thing or two about the art of pursuit? Of course! And so begins a wonderful, wandering tale, in which the narrative moves through both the maze of hotel corridors and much of the city centre, including the galleries of the Nordic Museum. But Magnus Florin is not only interested in geography. As in all his novels, there is more going on. The narratives and observations may seem commonplace, but this is a surface that conceals great, labyrinthine depths. As always in life. And there, in the world of the soul, the imagination, and our dreams, is where The Pursuers operates. In his clear, joyous language, Magnus Florin tells a love story dedicated to a man and a woman at the centre of the novel, as well as to Stockholm and all the eccentric figures that inhabit its streets.
