New Swedish Books 24 Maya and the Magic Football
Boots There are plenty of books in the football genre. And many children who find it easy to like football but difficult to read are captivated by them. Their interest in the subject can push them forward in their desire to join words together into a story. What Maya wants most of all in the world is a pair of new football boots, but her parents are busy with other stuff. They are going through a separation, Mum finds a new boyfriend whom Maya attempts to figure out: is he a new love or just a friend, like Bruno? Bruno who calls himself Maya’s coach and who comes up with plenty of fantastic suggestions on how to get the magic boots she’s dreaming of. Helena Lund-Isaksson has written several football books, always in simple and clear everyday prose that encourages reading. A text that for a short while becomes something very meaningful in a young reader’s life. Bettina Johansson further fuels their comprehension through her many simple, colourful, clear and emotionally descriptive images. No one needs to feel unsure of what the characters are thinking, feeling or experiencing. You empathise with Maya’s efforts and with her worry about her parents separating. As well as with the anxiety of not knowing how she will get her new football boots.
