SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2019 WASTE MATERIAL RECYCLI
NG Material recycling combines profitability and environmental gain. Through the re-use of material in new products a recycle chain is created that is greatly beneficial. An effective material recycling means reduced costs for us as well as for the society as a whole. Furthermore, the recycling of material means a lower climate impact. Together with the insurance companies we are working towards repairing rather than replacing defective parts whenever possible. Our operations generate large volumes of waste which in turn has a negative impact on the environment in those cases that the waste cannot be recycled. To make sure that the waste is handled effectively and according to our routines, we have carried out a program for improvement together with our Swedish partner within waste management. The project meant a detailed analysis of the waste management for each facilities of operation in order to find faults and apply tangible measures that contributes to us reaching our goal – the recycling of 70% of all materials. Alongside the local efforts at our facilities we also analyzed the waste routes of Hedin Bil centrally to identify possible improvements. This analysis helped us identify waste fractions that was previously partly faulty in their classification. The improvement project is an important reason as to why we have greatly improved the quota of material recycling during the year, from 57,8% to 68,9%. The work has also contributed to the identification of areas that needs further improve-ment within our waste management, which will be tended to in the upcoming year, such as the area of transport and freighting. RESULTS • • 68.9% material recycling is an improvement with 19.2% compared to 2018. The amount of material recycling is equivalent to 3,010.2 tons of CO2 -eq. ANALYSIS The performance of all of our facilities is followed up regularly through a web portal where site-specific information is presented, such as statistics of collected types of waste, including transports and volumes. Deficits that were identified in the project of 2019 is locally mainly about the lack of effective possibilities of recycling waste fractions. Hands-on examples that were identified was the lack of bins- and containers for certain significant waste fractions, wrongly dimensioned bins and containers and poorly marked instructions as to what goes in what bin- or container. Some waste fractions that were mis-classified in the category energyrecycling rather than material-recycling were also identified. TARGETS Our goal is to reach the targeted recycling of 70% of all materials. MATERIALÅTERVINNING % MATERIAL RECYCLING % 100 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 0 2016 2017 23 2018 2019 2016 2017 2018 2019
