BUSY OUT what’s inside The World Travel & Tourism
Council in London has just released their latest report (Cities Report 2018), which analyses the economic impact of the sector on 72 cities worldwide. In a list of the 15 fastest growing Travel & Tourism cities in the world, Dublin is one of only two European cities to feature alongside Dubrovnik showing an increase of 11.5% between 2016 and 2017, the 4th fastest rate in the world. It also estimates the tourism economy is now worth $3.7bn with our city claiming 60.2% of spend on the island. On paper, this all makes for happy reading but increased tourism of this rate comes with its drawbacks. As a visitor, you may (or may not) be aware of the rapid increase in hotel builds here to cope with this. Adapting to this level of growth brings its own challenges and the dangers of tourism experiences being diminished is always a concern. Cities such as Barcelona and Lisbon are also grappling with these dilemmas and the spill off benefit is to smaller sister cities such as Seville and Porto who allow a somewhat calmer experience. It’s a pleasant conundrum but one which bears consideration to ensure tourists don’t decide to turn on their heels. – Michael McDermott 4. Roadmap Gold rings 10. Can it be quantified, optimised, or commodified? Does Intimacy hide in surprising places, or in plain sight? There has never been a more important time to examine the way we relate to each other, and ask whether our definition of Intimacy needs a reboot. What would you share for an intimate moment with a stranger? Once again, the Science Gallery explores a theme through a myriad of intriguing artistic prisms.
