CLUB Schwefelgelb The tremendous St Patrick’s nig
ht D1 celebration of their 25 years in existence, coupled with new queer night on the block Grace down at Index (see Interview), has us somewhat more chipper about the chance of a more grassroots resurgence in the techno scene in this city. Schwefelgelb, adds to the offering, bringing their pulsing industrial beats from Berlin. EPs such as Dahinter das Gesicht (Behind the Face) and Den Umgekehrten Atem (The Inverse of Breath) are replete with metallic clangs, synth stabs and ambient whooshes. Support from Derry Boy Christian Donaghey, AKA Autumns. Best served with lashings of dry ice. The Sound House, Saturday April 20, €18 Kate O’Kelly, Wild Blue Talk Culture Vultures Venue Lost Lane Tony Clayton-Lea, a fan and friend of ours, has been conducting proceedings and mining insights from a host of ‘culture vultures’. Tonight he focuses on debut writers Sinéad Gleeson (Constellations) and Sarah Davis-Goff (Last Ones Left Alive) who are both seeing their creations birthed this spring. Gleeson is well known in literary circles having hosted The Book Show on RTÉ Radio One as well as editing a number of all-female anthologies. Davis-Goff is co-founder of the acclaimed indie publisher Tramp Press. Gender balance comes in the form of poet/writer/ playwright Colm Keegan whose latest collection Randomer was published last spring. Wordy and worthy. The Sound House, Wednesday April 17, €10 So farewell then Lillies Bordello, a venue we barely frequented. And while pianist Paul Harrington may be at a loss as to what to do with his weekends, the good news for everyone else is the transformation of this Grafton Street patch. With club nights such as Nialler9’s Spacer (Friday) and Lost & Sound (Saturday) being fronted by Sally Cinnamon, Kate Brennan-Harding & Claire Beck as well as Turning Pirate’s Una Molloy involved in bookings, it seems to be pitching itself as the more salubrious alternative to Whelan’s and The Grand Social. The soundsystem by Toby Hatchett (Hang Dai, The Big Romance) should also bring a pristine sound spectacle. Lost Lane launches Friday April 12 with Kormac Live, €20 86
