The source of life 20 years ago this summer Stockholm’s biggest festival event Stockholm Water Festival was going ahead for the last time. The original idea behind the event was to have a manifestation for the environment. This at a time when the general awareness of the subject was only a fraction of what it is today. Despite this the initiative became a huge festival, way larger than anyone anticipated. It morphed into the general type of city-festival that every city of a certain size in the whole country was putting on. It’s just that because it was Stockholm, it not only attracted the locals but an endless stream of visitors, which in turn eventually put the locals off. The festival died a pretty slow death, with decreasing interest and increasing losses – even if the ship went down to the soundtrack of some memorable, and some still talked about, concerts. After nine years of litter, fireworks, plane crashes and drunken behaviour from rural Swedes the plug was pulled. Today, we thankfully don’t have any bland mainstream event that transforms much of the city centre for a full week. Instead we have a string of smaller niche festivals that all pack a good punch in their respective categories. To aid your decision process when it comes to what to do this summer we have rounded up those events and festivities to find out what they have to offer. And on the subject of niche festivals, the legacy of that general idea from Stockholm Water Festival still lives on, although no-one pays much attention. World Water Week is the annual focal point for the globe’s water issues. This year they will address the theme ‘Water for Society – Including all’ between 25-30 August.
