New Swedish Books 26 Raise the Tempo, Mozart! Rai
se the Tempo, Mozart! is an unusual time-travelling story where a time machine touches down moments before the very first performance of one the most important operas in the history of classical music. Mozart is running late for the premiere of The Magic Flute, which he’s supposed to conduct too. Lucky for him Stella and Ravi roll in from the future on a skateboard that the composer quickly jumps on. To thank them for his rapid rescue they are invited along to the premiere. And so through the children the reader comes to discover the most famous opera in the world. Sofi Hjort’s creative vision is revealed, not so much in the text (which being an ‘easy-to-read-book’ is both simple and concise), but rather in the quirky narrative theme. This straightforward approach is also mirrored in Kim W. Andersson’s stripped down images that support the narrative, drawn in surprising colours and with highly revealing facial expressions. The book forms part of a series of exciting and unexpected time travels. Sofi Hjort (text) b. 1970 Kim W. Andersson (ill.) b. 1979 Raise the Tempo, Mozart!
