café by Slussplan has gone through a revamp over the summer and demolished the wall between it and its neighbouring dry cleaners. The result is a combined café and wine bar that is open from early morning until late evenings. Bistro Capitol The former cinema by St: Eriksplan has finally hit its crowdfunding target and revealed its new incarnation. The tables in the bistro are available for bookings and if they are full there are some drop-in seats in the foyer. 3. Restaurant Portal Restaurant Portal has expanded with a bar that is open from 16:00 on weekdays and from lunch onwards on Saturdays. “I am really proud and look forward to taking care of the unique place. It will be a fantastic bar – a lot of people’s new local bar, says the owner Klas Lindberg. The bar is located just next to the Portal restaurant. 4. Californian guest appearance Bruce Hill’s successful career was launched in San Francisco in the early 80s and is responsible for four of the city’s most heralded establishments. On 26 and 27 September he will make a guest appearance at Vassa Eggen and in his suitcase he’ll bring some of his signature dishes from the Bay Area. “I have been spellbound by the Swedish people, their food and culture ever since my first visit back in 2000. I’m also a fan of Vassa Eggen after having eaten my way through their menu. I look forward to working with Swedish fish and seafood and with seasonal produce to create tastes reminiscent of San Francisco,” says Hill, whose relationship with Stockholm comes from the fact that his sister lives here. 5. Gin & Tonic champion When the Swedish championship in Gin and tonic went ahead in early September the winner of the professional category was Bulgarian Mihail Mihailov. He recently moved here from Spain so we’re not sure how well-received the first prize, a trip (back) to Barcelona, was. In any case, his “Electric G&T” was true to the original and made from Stockholms Bränneri Gin, Schweppes Premium Mixer Pink Pepper and orange zest with blood grape, rosemary and the spectacular Sichuan flower (don’t eat the whole thing!) being the garnish. Award-winning bartender Mathin Lundgren spearheaded the jury and called it “hands down, the best gin and tonic I have ever had”. To sample the winner you would have to head to Miss Clara where Mihail is the head bartender. 21 photo Rick Camargo photo Markus Crépin Sundström
