Festival season Wikipedia breaks it down for us: “Festivals often serve to fulfill specific communal purposes, especially in regard to commemoration or thanking to the gods and goddesses. Celebrations offer a sense of belonging for religious, social, or geographical groups, contributing to group cohesiveness. They may also provide entertainment.” In our part of the world, we tend to focus on the latter, even if a sense of belonging, group cohesiveness and even some thanking goddesses does occur. While we are known for being able to throw a good party and arrange numerous events, the Filipinos have taken it to a whole new level. They have more than 42,000 major and minor festivals in the Philippines during a calendar year, the majority of which are specific to village level, but still. They are probably the only country in the modern world where each day of the year has at least one specific celebration. Here in Sweden the festivals are compressed into a few months of the year and as we’re gearing up for an intense, well in our view, festival season we take a look at both the Smash hip-hop festival and the exciting Swedish premiere of Lollapalooza. Apart from that, we’re getting into a summery mode and are looking forward to al fresco drinking (see page 21) and Trädgården’s ten-year anniversary celebrations (see page 10). Enjoy the sunshine, and the good sounds. Peter Steen-Christensen Totally Stockholm is a monthly HKM publication and is distributed from 350 selected distribution points.
