ace his older brother who died. In those days, the Prince usually ap- peared in photos traipsing around golf courses, pulling a golf cart, wearing his trademark beret at an angle. He has played many courses through the years including courses on the French Riviera, in Tylösand in southern Sweden and a number of Stockholm courses including Drottningholm, Lidingö, Kevinge, Djursholm, Värmdö and Ullna. "I mostly played Kevinge," he says, " a wounderful course. But on the whole, the courses were of good standard, and I'd like to put in a word of praise for the greenkeepers who really do a marvellous job." • What is it about golfthat appeals to the Prince? . "What appeals to me most is that golf is a game of concentration. But I must admit that I had great difficulty learning how to swing properly, despite the assis- tance of many excellent instructors who did everything to reveal the mysteries of the game to me." The- Prince, who is otherwise known as a competitive person, says that he doesn' t like to compete in golf. He sees it more as a form of relaxation, a "friendly game". He has competed on occasion but for the most part he likes to have the com- pany of a few good friends, playing at a leisurely pace, enjoying himself. Nowadays his most common golfing companion is his wife, Princess Lilian. "Sweden is a sporting nation. So it's no mere coincidence that golf has grown so popular here. When I was chairman of the Swedish Golf Federation in the 1940s, there were 11 golf courses throughout Sweden, and now there are upwards of 200. And more are constant- ly being added. • Describe the feeling of hitting a golf ball perfectly! "The feeling I get when my swing is working right and I hit the ball perfectly is wonderful. I know that I've been con- centrating properly then, and that it has made a difference." Prince Bertil is the "Prince of sports" to the people of Sweden. Sweden's big- gest morning daily once headed an arti- de about him with mixed sentiments: "Lazy, secret smoker, worst marks for orderliness, but a superb athlete." He attended Lundsberg's boarding school in Värmland in west Sweden, but he was more interested in playing sports than cracking his textbooks. In winter, the Prince skated on the lake below the school and he spent most of summer training for the various decathlon events. "I've tried almost all sports,' he says. At 16 he skated the 500 meters in 48.7 seconds. "I admit that doesn't sound impressive by today's standards," he says, "but back then the world record was around 45 seconds. And the ice we skated on was rough, uneven and filled with large bumps." "I also skated the 1 500 meters and practiced hard to improve. Maybe not as intensively and scientifically as they do today, but my ambitions were no doubt the same." Prince Bertil speaks with a touch of warmth in his voice of his physical edu- cation teacher in Lundsberg, Eugen Bolmstedt, who was also a Swedish de- cathlon champion. It was Bolmstedt who sparked the prince's interest in the decathlon, the most demanding event in track and field. "I was decathlon champion two years running at Lundsberg." the Prince says. "I remember the pain of the concluding event, the 1 500 meter race, the second time. I had to beat another fella by a certain number of seconds to win and I managed to do it. I'll never forget that pain, nor the happiness I felt when I won." Prince Bertil has been, and still is, na- Youth golf in Sweden Talented young golfers in Sweden between the ages of 10 and 18 have no crancetoescape. The Swedish Golf Federation is so well organized today that young golfers are watched at a very early stage and the good ones taken under wing. For players around ten years old, and in some cases even younger, it starts with the "Föreningsbanken Cup" and for the best of these, the next step is the five regional youth tournaments. For young golfers, up to the age of 18, with even higher aspirations to become the best and even play on Sweden's national team, the "Trygg Hansa Teen Tour" awaits. The young golfing hopefuls are given their first training by club youth leaders. "he next stage is handled by district faders followed by the leaders of the ve regions into which Swedish golf is f ivided. At the central level, serving as re- source pools, are elite committees, youth committees and development councils. Today's organization is the result of a long development process which has gone on throughout the I980s. The foundation was laid in 1976 when the "Colgate Cup" - now the Förenings- banken Cup - was launched. In 1979, the Swedish Golf Federation formed a young golfers' committee. Today's model works well, but the regional breakdown must be reviewed because of the enornous upsurge in the number of clubs. The current division was drawn up when there were 150 clubs, and now there are 213. In addition to competitive develop- ment programs, there is also a training program. The Independent Golf School and the two golf colleges enable promi- sing young golfers to combine training and study. One of the colleges is located in Perstorp/Klippan in southern Sweden and opened in 1983, and another in Mark in western Sweden opened in 1986. The very first golf college started in Stock- holm in 1981 but its program has been taken over by the Mark college. After completing this schooling, young men about to do their mandatory mili- tary service, can apply to serve in the sports platoon in Växjö, where they can combine their military service with training in their favorite sport. Virtually all of Sweden's best golfers, professionals and amateurs alike, have followed this route to reach the top. The aim of all this is for Sweden to become established as one of the world's top men's and women's golfing nations. Proof of the country's progress towards this goal is the fact that Swedes have advanced at all levels of the European Order of Merit every year. 137
