LEAPING INTO THE UNKNOWN The summer holiday seaso
n has officially ended. If this is your first time in Dublin, you missed the fantastic heat wave our city experienced. Some of the Irish couldn’t cope, or stop talking about it, but expats from Brazil and other lusty climes felt that they could finally remove their woolly jumpers and bare their bodies outside nightclubs. But with each season comes a sense of renewal, a switching of habits, an annual reacquaintance with both the familiar and unknown. As a tourist, our growing tendency is to stick to the guidebook, the recommendation or the Trip Advisor review. In her column for The Times earlier this month, cultural commentator Caitlin Moran said that a holiday is “a thing of extremes; a leap into the unknown”. While it should be, our default, wi-fi enabled, settings deem it less likely these days. We propose you leap. Take a morning or afternoon – or entire day – to ditch your well researched plans, and instead wander off and visit some local independent Dublin merchants where the history of the city is present not only in the buildings but also the people that inhabit them. You can even take a walk along the canal and catch a glimpse of the swans as the families return with their cygnets – but leave the bread at home. And when you are done exploring you can get back to planning and catch Caitlin Moran at the National Concert Hall on September 7, at 8pm. – Rose Ugoalah PICK OF THE MONTH LBC_buscard_front red.pdf 1 29/08/2016 14:04 what’s inside 4. Twelve acts from twelve different countries, each one of them chosen for their unique sound and innovation in their approach to their music. Over these four nights, you’ll hear what’s new and compelling in the jazz scene. Produced by Dublin based Improvised Music Company (IMC), 12 Points is a nomadic festival that in the past has taken place Denmark and Spain. It is a festival that celebrates and creates a platform for emerging European jazz talent. And it shouldn’t be the only one blowing its own trumpet, clarinet or saxophone.
