Checklist: Before the arrival of the future artis
t in residence – Provide assistance during the residence permit application process with the Swedish Migration Board. – Pay residence permit application fees at the embassy. – Housing: have household utensils been obtained? Does the internet connection, TV and phone work? Make sure that all the keys for the flat, laundry etc. are ready and that the flat has been cleaned. – Book travel arrangements. What is needed for the trip? Book an extra luggage option? How will the artist arrive from the airport/train station? Who will be receiving them on arrival? – Go through the safety assessment with management, include ICORN when relevant. – Make plans for the first few weeks in the City of Refuge; personal identity number, insurance, choices of bank account. – Arrange (pre)school for any accompanying children. – Explore support mechanisms available to accommodate possible mental health/ trauma treatment. – Prepare work materials, mobile phone and, if the City of Refuge is can provide for one, a workplace. – Prepare Swedish language instruction (SFI, for example). – Put together a welcome package containing important telephone numbers, a map, bus timetables, information about the municipality, cultural platforms, ICORN etc. – Keep in contact with the artist and find out what expectations and wishes they have regarding professional and social development and platforms that may be relevant. Avoid scheduling meetings before the artist has arrived. – Generate professional opportunities by creating a reference group from the local cultural life. Activate other interfaces that the artist may encounter, such as national collegial networks. 25/49
