Cities of Refuge 1
During the residency period Each artist in reside
nce is different, with their own expectations as to what the two years in the City of Refuge will bring. Some want, or need, complete anonymity. In that case, the City of Refuge should focus on making the artist’s stay safe and secure, with a few social contacts. Others need to establish themselves and be introduced to Swedish cultural life as quickly as possible. As soon as the artist has arrived and is ready to discuss matters, it is important to talk about how the artist and coordinator should communicate and cooperate, and discuss the artist’s expectations from the host city. The first thing that should be arranged when the artist arrives at the City of Refuge is a Swedish personal identity number for the artist in residence and any accompanying individuals. Only then will the artist be able to open a bank account and receive free medical care. It can take several weeks for the procedure to be completed and the personal identity number to be ready, so it is a good idea to have alternatives ready for the first few scholarship payments. The information below mentions only the artist in residence, but the same rights apply to any accompanying spouse, partner or children. National registration and Swedish personal identity number After registration, an artist in residence can apply for a Swedish personal identity number. This entitles the holder to receive healthcare and dental treatment. A Swedish personal identity number is also needed for opening a bank account. The Swedish Tax Agency automatically shares national registration information with other authorities, such as the Swedish Migration Board and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency. To obtain a Swedish personal identity number, contact the nearest tax office. It is important to state that the person intends to stay in the country for more than a year. The artist in residence is registered at the address they will live at during the residency period. Documents to bring to the Swedish Tax Agency: ● Passport. ● Residence permit card and/or the residence permit decision/visa. ● Birth certificates/passports for any children or other family members that will be registered at the address. 26/49
