Cities of Refuge 1
● deactivate location services, ● not to “check i
n” at places, ● depending on the level of protection needed, remove access to Facebook and other social media. If social media is deemed acceptable, the security settings should be checked and set to restrictive regarding the information they disclose. In order to prevent the ability to trace an artist’s phone number, cell phones belonging to artists in residence are usually registered to the City of Refuge rather than the artist and their address. Suggestion: Contact the phone operator and ask them to keep the number hidden from services like www.hitta.se, www.eniro.se etc. Informing the network If work has started on building security and professional networks etc. in the City of Refuge, be careful to inform colleagues about the security situation. If possible, call a meeting before the artist arrives and review the communication and information protocol. When events are organised or other public activities are planned, such as publicity, experts on the situation in the relevant country can be contacted to assess the security situation. If public appearances must be advertised, it may be safer that such publicity is done after the event if the security situation requires extra caution. In the event of threats The most important thing to remember is that artists in residence are protected by the same legal system as Swedish citizens. If threats are made or other crimes are committed, they should be documented and reported to the police. ICORN recommends that the City of Refuge coordinator, together with the closest manager and the security department, establish a personal action plan for what the artist or individual being threatened should do. 42/49
