WRINGING IT LISTENING TO THE CITY As part of Velo
-city International Cycling Conference 2019, a new series of audio guides has been developed for the city. Artist and curator Michelle Browne has commissioned three writers (Louise Bruton, Francis Halsall and Louise Williams) to guide you through the city on wheels. Each will look at the city from a different perspective, free-wheeling through the city and weaving alternative routes and experiences of its streets. The audio-guides will be available on the Velo City app and to download from Soundcloud on the week of the conference from June 22 to 30. #TheCitizenCycle @thecitizencycle ROADMAP Michael McDermott We all know that miserable experience when the hand dryer is poxy, where you’d be better off blowing your own hands and where you have to streak the remaining wet through your hair in order to make way for someone else to suffer the same fate. Grogan’s is particularly notorious for this grim offering and we had hoped their recent, expense spared, bathroom refurb might mark an improvement. However, early signs of work being done are cheap and bleak. Step forward Irish Hand Dryer Reviews (10 posts, 2,110 followers) which has already surpassed its UK equivalent (124 posts, 1,800 followers). Clearly, a niche has been identifed. insta: irish_hand_dryer_reviews Nice to see… Studiotonic, the new Jam Park exhibition space, whose first exhibition Synthesis is with muralists Decoy, Kambo, Atmos and Weaks who have created sculptural pieces for the venue. RIPPLE EFFECT Ceadogán have been making covetable rugs from their Barrystown base in Wexford for many years. Now they have added artist James Earley and printmaker Denise Breen to their roster with a collection inspired by the beauty and infinite wonder of the circle. Hand-tufted in 100% pure wool, file them under ‘rug for life’. We promise to put it on the ‘gram if you send a pic. Early’s The Widening Gyre is in a limited edition of three, €9,850 Locomotion, Brainstorm, Akimbo and Longshore Drift by Breen range in price from €1,545 to €2,600 insta @ceadogan_rugmakers ceadogan.ie jamese.ie deirdre-breen.com DREAM WITH US From her Bronze Lion winning ‘Ideal Man’ advert for GQ a decade ago to her latest ‘Dream With Us’ for Nike, Omagh-born and Trinity-educated Aoife McArdle has established herself in the firmament of highly sought-after commercial directors. After her debut feature Kissing Candice’s release last year, McArdle cosies up with the colossus that is Nike. ‘Dream With Us’ looks as expensive as it cost and is the follow-up to ‘Dream Crazier’, their Serena Williams narrated ad. Pumped with inspiring messages and a rising soundtrack, it centres around their sponsorship of FIFA Women’s World Cup and a strategy to grow their appeal to women. It ends with the message that “the craziest dream of all is the one that starts a million more.” McArdle’s work will surely inspire many more. aoifemcardle.com 10
