aveller named Dublin as one of the friendliest cities in the world? It also named Cork and Galway too along with San Miguel de Allende and Puebla in Mexico, Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Queenstown in New Zealand, Adelaide in Australia, Chang Mai in Thailand and Victoria in Canada? In its endorsement it wrote: “Sure, the capital city of Dublin has seen a spike in global companies and expats putting down roots, but it has still maintained its Irishness. Notably friendly residents give Midwesterners a run for their money, and you never get shoved aside on a busy street; it’s par for the course to slow down to a stroll through St. Stephen’s Green, or linger over a meal at one of the city’s buzzy new restaurants. Nearly every street has (at least) one pub filled with both locals and tourists, coming together to celebrate life – and that welcoming vibe lasts even after a couple pints. In short: “Great people, lots of activities, terrific nightlife. What’s not to love?” These lists can, of course, be quiet arbitrary but it’s always nice to be recognised. And sure if we catch sight of you on your travels, we can tell you how the Irish Stew is ranked 47th by the Lonely Planet for top culinary experiences around the world. It’s nice to be on the good list whoever is making it up. – Michael McDermott 4. Roadmap Rain or shine 10. Hard Working Class Heroes Music is their mojo 16. Map Off the grid 18. It works through a simple but powerful idea: showcasing outstanding architecture for everyone to experience. Buildings that aren’t usually accessible to the public and buildings of architectural merit open their doors for one weekend, with architectural tours provided by expert guides. Highlights include a talk by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara from Grafton Architects who curated the Venice Biennale this year. They will discuss their Freespace theme (Fri Oct 2, Trinity College). Tours of landmark spaces (Bank of Ireland on College Green which housed our original parliament) take place alongside peeks inside tech goliaths (Facebook, airbnb), new developments (GoetheInstitut) and a number of private dwellings.
