ood Cop Good Cop team of Offset Festival Director, Bren Byrne, along with authors Shane O’Brien and Stephen Rogers and producer Jessica Wright have conceived of How Will Santa Find Us? The collective are “using their spare time to do creative things for good causes” and this, their first initiative in aid of Focus Ireland, is a most welcome response from Ireland’s creative community to our growing homeless crisis, in particular the startling number of homeless children. It features artwork from some of Ireland’s best loved illustrators; including Lauren O’Neill, Steve McCarthy, Steve Simpson, Peter Donnelly, Tara O’Brien, Fatti Burke, Kevin Waldron, Yasmeen Ismail and Alan Dunne. howwillsantafindus.com goodcopgoodcop.ie ROADMAP Michael McDermott SNKR INC is “a media brand representing global sneaker culture” and Ivan Dudynsky is its co-founder. The Art of Sneakers is a collection of works from 19 different creative minds who know that the the sneaker is not mere footwear but highly-prized status symbols signifying taste and a certain cultural cache. One artist deconstructs the most sought-after, exclusive, sneakers in the world and turns them into dizzyingly intricate masks. Another uses nothing more than pencil, paper, and an insane amount of patience to create stunning photorealistic drawings of her favorite shoes. Yet another takes shoeboxes and cuts them into hundreds of pieces, shaping them into something like life-size cardboard taxidermy. From sculpture and graphic design to origami and food, the sneaker is the source of inspiration for these leap-off points. The Art of Sneakers by Ivan Dudynsky is published by powerHouse books, $35 theartofsneakers.com SOUND IT OUT Fancy knowing what a tropical forest at dawn in West Africa sounds like or coal falling down a shute in a coal mine or an air strike? Listen up then cause The BBC Sound Effects library has 16,011 of these for your enjoyment. The archive incorporates effects used by the corporation’s radio output since the 1920s and is as complex and detailed as you might imagine. bbcsfx.acropolis.org.uk Mean streets… Angela Fahy is a woman with a mission, to cleanse the mean streets of Ranelagh of delinquent drivers and cyclists. They may have surpassed their €15,000 target towards a new studio but you should still support their sonic endeavours. fundit.ie/project/a-new-studio-for-dublindigital-radio-1 10 The redevelopment of the historic Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market in Smithfield is broadly welcome. So too is the Council’s desire to “conserve heritage assets” and have it “become a natural hub for quality food and local produce”. What is more foreboding is their stated wish to create a “tourist attraction” and contract a “single-source operator who will be responsible for restoring the market building, fitting it out and operating the space.” In other words, relinquish control of the space to someone who will be justifiably driven by margins given their upfront investment. Are we, yet again, turning another space into one for tourists first and locals as an after-thought? We recently strolled through Borough Market, on a trip to London, noting in their Market Life magazine how over the last two decades “they have provided a platform upon which small, inexperienced traders bursting with enthusiasm and bright ideas can grow to become leaders in their fields,” and how they are “actively seeking to incubate the next generation of traders, particularly those who offer fresh ideas about sustainability, health, waste minimisation and local production.” Can a single-source operator deliver such rich diversity and opportunity? Who owns Borough Market? Borough Market is an independent institution owned by a charitable trust and run by a board of volunteer trustees.
