festival We’ve Only Just Begun exhibition Valérie
Blass: Second out for this three-day festival featuring 26 acts across two stages. Wyvern Lingo, Pillow Queens, Roe and Soda Blonde are the headliners but we’ll be marking our curiosity cards by catching the likes of Lydia Ford, pictured, a Brooklyn-based Irish pop artist and Meath duo Elkin. It also features Fears, who featured in our music therapy feature in our last edition. We’ve Only Just Begun are also eschewing a foghorn push around the fact that it is an all-female line-up. We can only hope this is the start of a new norm too. Whelan’s, Friday August 9 to Sunday August 11, €10 (each night), €20 (weekend) The Mime, the Model and the Dupe The Mime, the Model and the Dupe is the debut exhibition by this Montreal based artist. “The very essence of a sculpture is that it has to stand on its own,” says Blass. “You can have an idea but it has to have a base. It has to be raised, have a way of standing.” This selection of works engage with images, gestures and forms related to the body. There’s surprise and distortion at every twist and turn. These stand up and stack up. This is the stuff of dreams for those who have splurged in Woodies and looked forlornly at the skies this summer. Some of the big guns in tow include Matty Matheson, pictured, who was already here this spring to agree with us and bestow the title of favourite dining experience in the city to Assassination Custard. Jiyeon Lee and Cody Taylor from Heirloom Market BBQ in Atlanta and six-time World Champion Pitmaster Chris Lilly will also be in attendance. And there’s a series of ‘Offside’ dining experiences also in which Nick Solares, host of Meat Life, presents a journey through dry-aged steak and Asador expert Rama Basilio presents a four-course journey through Argentine Asado. Prepare to set some fire under your Smokin’s, the currency of favour and flavour, at TBG. Herbert Park, Thursday August 15 to Sunday August 18, €20-30 biggrillfestival.com 90
