Högberg does the opposite. He highlights female figures who have been truly exceptional. In this way he is harking back to an older style of historiography in which personal history is central. History's Forgotten Women consists of seven chapters, each focusing on a woman of historical significance for her time period, including Aphra Behn, an English spy and writer in the 1600s, and Germaine de Staël, a French intellectual whose contemporary influence deserves to be re-examined. History's Forgotten Women has a popular education feel, being clearly and skillfully narrated and historically accurate but without footnotes or anything else to weigh it down. Photo: David Eric
