He announced that he has every intention of keeping up the U.S. Embassy’s support and momentum in the area of alternative energy. Parallel with the serious topics, we were treated to Am- bassador Barzun’s easy humor throughout the breakfast meeting, for example, when referring to the ambassadorial presentation of credentials as “doing the King thing”. Barzun is enthusiastic about Sweden, as witnessed by his advice to the Swedish tourist industry on how to attract more U.S. visitors: focus on winter. His sources have told him that “Sweden does winter better than everybody. They don’t talk about it, because they’re trying to get through it.” We’ll ask him for his opinion again in late January. AMCHAM NEWS Page 3 AmCham News, No 3, 2009 Swedes win USA–Sweden polo invitational outside Stockholm on September 10-11, 2009. The beautiful site of this unique event was Almare Stäket Polo Country Club representing Sweden, which hosted Scuppernong Polo Club of Atlanta, GA, representing the USA. Until this match, a U.S. team had not played in Sweden in a recurring tournament. The game was divided into four chuk- T kas each day with the average handicap of “0” for both teams. Play was vigorous and competitive; however, Sweden won both matches handily on their home ground. The umpires, whose duties included selecting the MVP, awarded it to Geoff Conroy of Team USA. With the outstanding weather and hospitality served up by the Swedish team, all players and fans enjoyed all aspects of the trip. The strong friendships forged will be a bridge between the clubs, and successfully promote growth of the sport in Stockholm and Atlanta. The new U.S. Ambassador to Sweden, Matthew Barzun, himself a polo fan, received the U.S. team at his residence and expressed his thanks to both clubs for the initiative, especially since the match took place on September 11. After the first day of play, the U.S. team had the great fortune to meet with the Board of AmCham Sweden and its Managing Director, Berit Salheim, at the Almare Stäket manor house, where AmCham offered the teams its best wishes and congratulations on participating he U.S.-Sweden Polo Invitational, a first of its kind in Sweden, was held in this historic event. In addition, Gary Baker, President of the American Club of Sweden, attended the Après Polo Party hosted by the U.S. team at the Lydmar Hotel, where he echoed the sentiments of the U.S. Ambassador and AmCham. The Scuppernong Polo Club as Team USA was represented by Geoff Conroy, Jeannie Hartman, Jim Campbell and David Kaplan. The Almare Stäket Polo Country Club as Team Sweden, joined by the Stockholm Polo Club, was represented by Jonas Bingestam, Per Jacobsson, Caroline Sjöström, Anna Sofia Olsson, Catharina Tengblad, Adi Quade, Niclas Johansson, Patric Norman, and Johan Seth. AMCHAM NEWS Page 4 AmCham News, No 3, 2009 The new U.S. Ambassador also invests in environmental technology it would also be wrong to just focus on it. There is so much more to highlight here in Sweden. Just look at how much good has come from this forum.” “There is much we can do together to highlight new ideas in this area. New ideas that can be beneficial not only for the two countries we represent, but for thewholeworld.” One thing that Barzun particularly highlighted was that Sweden has managed the trick of having good growth while cutting down on emissions. “To show that it is possible to do both Stockholm on September 16-17. One of the highlights was that the new Ambassador to Sweden, Matthew Barzun, is continuing his predecessor’s focus on entrepreneurship in environmental technology industry. This year’s forum was launched by T Magnus Aronsson, Managing Director ESBRI, Jöran Hägglund, state secretary of Swedish Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications and Randy Mitchell from U.S. Department of Commerce. The entrepreneurial climate in Sweden differs a lot from that in the U.S. but there are also similarities. One important issue is letter from the MD Berit Salheim Ambassador Matthew Barzun at our Business Breakfast last month. On October 29 we will hold our annual reception to- W gether with Ambassador Barzun for new and potential members. If you know of companies interested in the U.S.-Sweden community and business exchange, let us know! A new committee is being created to work with Corporate Social Responsibility, an important subject - especially during challenging times like the ones we have now. Some of the topics of our upcoming events are free trade, copyright and bribery. Serious subjects brought up by new interesting guest speakers. Successful communication You are most welcome to join us – and don’t forget to mark the date for a more social and relaxing event – our Christmas Mingle in December 8. I am very proud to welcome eight new AMCHAM members in this newsletter – all of whom joined after the summer. We’re looking forward to working with you. Berit Salheim berit.salheim@chamber.se his year’s edition of the Sweden-U.S. Entrepreneurial Forum was held in access to capital, both institutional and informal. What can we learn from each other? Under the banner of One Big Thing, former U.S. Ambassador Michael Wood opened a campaign to launch the Swedish environmental technology companies for U.S. venture capitalists. The effort continues, announced his successor, Matthew Barzun, although in a slightly different version that remains consistent with the ambassador’s priorities. “Climate change is a really important issue for President Obama,” said Barzun. “And co-operation with Sweden has given good results. It would be crazy to stop working with the One Big Thing. However, simultaneously is incredibly important, for the U.S. and the rest of the world. Sweden can serve as a good example here.” Barzun’s speech at the Sweden-U.S. En- trepreneurial Forum was also his first in Sweden, where he talked about his own entrepreneurship. Before he committed himself politically, he was, among other things, involved in the start of media company CNET, which was sold for $1.8 billion in 2008. On his political resume he can include the fundraising work for the campaign leading up to Barack Obama’s victory in presidential elections.
