A world of opportunities 2009.01 Page 3 I envy you
My years at Scania have given me more in life than most people dare to dream of. I have found challenges, camaraderie, excitement, satisfaction, failure and success. In short, I have a job I enjoy very much at a company I love. And yet I envy you. I envy you as a young graduate with your whole life ahead of you. I remember well the feeling of stepping into Scania for the first time as a newly hired trainee. It was 1972. The world was an open book. Just as it is for you today. Scania is a world of opportunity. We have room for everyone, from management candidates to specialists. We provide the right situation for someone interested in a global career – and fertile ground for someone preferring to stay close to home. Scania is a successful company with products that people around the world love. The secret of our success is the commitment of our employees. Everybody at Scania knows that constant improvement – with the best interests of the customer always in mind and quality first, every step of the way – results in strong, long-term growth. This commitment has given us unique longterm profitability, which in turn enables the company to continue investing in the health and personal development of our employees. The world of Scania is a dynamic one, full of opportunity. We invite you to join us. Leif Östling, MD and Group CEO Engineering and Business Economics graduate

head Ideas and values fuel us “I like to put it like this: we are 35,000 people who share the same basic values and thoughts about how we want our workplace to be. Oh, and by the way, we make trucks, buses and engines. But it could be anything. It would have come out great anyway.” These are the thoughts of a man who started out at Scania’s industrial secondary school, worked his way up through the ranks on the production side, and now has a top position in the company’s Competence Development department. He’s a perfect example of Scania’s excellent internal mobility. And he puts his finger on something that is absolutely typical of Scania: Ideas. Values. Methods. Our approach to the job. Our core values are our most powerful tool The customer comes first. Respect for the individual. Quality. These three core values are the basic pillars of Scania’s conceptual world. They are the tools we use to earn the trust of our 4–5 customers and colleagues. They are the values we rely on when we have to make tough decisions. Based on our core values we have developed a number of principles that you will understand, as a Scania employee, are important guideposts in our day-to-day efforts. These range from principles of management to the way we balance and prioritise our daily work. Continuous improvement, ongoing competence development One of the recurring themes in Scania’s conceptual world is the idea of continuous improvement. We regularly review all processes to discover how we could do even better the next time. As a result of this approach – viewing deviation from expectations as something positive – we are currently as much a learning organisation as we are a manufacturing organisation. Competence development and business development go hand in hand.

Extensive training opportunities If you want to create high internal mobility, you need curious employees who are eager to dig deeper and learn more. To motivate and develop our employees, every year we offer more than 300 courses in leadership, technology, economics and more. y at Scania for a very long time indeed. Personally, I have been here for ten years. In my opinion, that says a lot about this workplace. Obviously, much depends on the opportunities for development one encounters, but all the benefits of working here make a difference, too. For me as a mother of two children, for example, the fact that we are encouraged to find the right balance between leisure and work is very important.” Camilla Dewoon Product Director, Sales & Marketing

Today she works at the interface between Scania IT and Research and Development. “When I was offered a permanent position, I still had my thesis left to do, but I liked what I was doing so well that I couldn’t say no. Soon I found an assignment that was also a good thesis topic and I could finish my degree.” Industrial doctoral programme Engineering graduates at Scania are offered permanent employment with a view towards completing a licentiate or doctoral dissertation. there for you “When I started talking about taking a parental leave of absence, my immediate supervisor was 100% supportive, answering, ‘Of course you should take the opportunity.’ I ended up taking four days off a week for four months. Now that it’s over, I can say that everything worked perfectly. The company was there for me, compensating me for some of my loss of income, but the most important thing was the purely personal support I received for my decision.” Name: Jonas Nordin Age: 33 Works as: Shop Manager, Production Lives in: Täby Education: Engineering, engine technology, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
