or crabs is easy and fun. All you need is a crab fishing rod (or a string with a clothes pin), a bucket, some bait and maybe a hand net. WHERE CAN I FIND THE CRABS? The best place to fish is usually around the jetties where the water is 0.5 to 1 metre deep. Crabs like to hide among rocks and sea grass. WHAT SHOULD I USE FOR BAIT? Mussels are the crabs’ favourite food. You can find mussels among sea grass or by the jetties. Crack the shell with a stone and attach the bait to the clothespin of your crab fishing rod. (If you can’t find mussels, use a piece of raw bacon, a shrimp or something else that smells a little.) WHAT DO I DO NOW? Drop the clothespin with the bait to the bottom. Try to place it next to a rock or seaweed - that’s where the biggest crabs hide! WHAT DO I DO WHEN I GET THE CRAB? Wait until the crab has a good grip on the bait. Then gently pull up the line. If you have a big crab, a net can be useful. Then gently drop the crab into a bucket of fresh sea water. If the crab has eaten all the bait, attach a new one before dropping the clothesline back into the sea. WHAT DO I DO WHEN I HAVE FINISHED FISHING? When you have finished fishing, always return the crabs to the sea in the same place where you caught them. Remember that crabs are living animals. Change the water in the bucket often, don’t put them in the sun and take care of them.
