SPRING 2016 DARIA BOGDANSKA (WORDS AND IMAGES) WA
GE SLAVES: MEMOIRS OF A PRECARIOUS MIGRANT WORKER GALAGO RIGHTS: GALAGO Wage Slaves Daria Bogdanska tells a flowing visual tale reminiscent of the French alternative scene. Her drawings tell the true story of how she moved to Sweden from Poland as a 25-yearold to start again from scratch. She gets a job in one of Malmö’s many restaurants, where hip young things gather for cheap food and drinks – most of them unaware that the employees are working without contracts for terrible wages in a racially and sexuallydiscriminating hierarchy. The graphic novel follows Daria’s hard-fought struggle against an illegal system upon which she and many in her vicinity are simultaneously reliant. A pointed confrontation with one of the grubbier corners of the labour market. 63
