enty years since it first burst onto Dublin’s dining scene, the Spicebox is the gift that keeps on giving. Originally created by a humble Chinese takeaway in Dublin in 2006, it rapidly became an internet sensation, and as recently as last month was still garnering 100,000 TikTok monthly searches here. The concept that spawned hundreds of variations continues to evolve, and this summer sees Boojum injecting new energy into one of the city’s biggest food obsessions. Packed with flavour, their limited edition Cholula Spice Bag adds a Mexican twist to a takeaway classic, featuring Cholula Hot Honey Chicken, crispy Mexican Spiced Patatas and Fajita Veg, with an optional garnish pot of fresh chillies and spring onions to create that authentic Spice Bag taste. In time-honoured fashion it’s designed to be eaten straight from the bag, and the ingredients come served the traditional way in what the franchise describes as ‘the ultimate grab-and-go feast’. The Cholula Spice Bag is available in-store, for collection and delivery until the end of August. @boojum KBAKED AND BOTTLED Baked and Bottled, an offshoot from the creators of Piglet Wine Bar, recently opened its doors in Ashtown, where the new neighbourhood bakery, café and wine bar is currently serving up gorgeous coffee, pancakes and pastries. Menu highlights so far include Lemon and Poppy Seed Pound Cake with Toasted Meringue, Fennel and Sage Sausage Rolls made with Croissant Dough, and Banoffee Bread and Butter Pudding. The newcomer is now also selling a nice selection of vino, and recently hosted their first wine night, featuring copious amounts of cheese, charcuterie and wine. In addition to the great bakes on display in the shop, they also accept orders for individual occasion cakes via DM or email. Give them four days’ notice and watch them bake up a storm. @bakedandbottled_dublin POUCH PERFECT HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHINA SICHUAN! It’s not easy running a restaurant in Dublin city and surroundings these days, so hats off to the folk at China Sichuan who have just chalked up five decades in business at their Sandyford location. Founded by the late David Hui, who originally partnered with the Chinese Ministry of Culture to bring highly trained Sichuan chefs to Ireland for the first time, the restaurant prides itself on bringing together great local ingredients and traditional Sichuan and Cantonese cookery. Indeed, the resulting culinary experience is so good that it has often been cited by a number of the city’s Michelin star chefs as their go-to spot when opting for Chinese food on their nights off. The restaurant is now run by David’s son Kevin, who recently worked with Sichuan native chef Barry Sun to create two sold-out dinner menus to celebrate their big milestone. Regulars continue to visit, opting for old favourites such as Beef Merlot, Luóbo Gao, and Waltip Chicken Dumplings, while a gluten-free menu can also be enjoyed seven days a week. Meanwhile, anyone interested in taking a deeper dive into the region’s cuisine culture is encouraged to check out their monthly Heritage and Innovation Specials.
