ROADMAP ARTS COUNCIL AWARDS Five Dublin-based art
ists have won the ‘Deis Recording and Publication’ award, receiving up to €10,000 euro in funding for recording projects in a scheme funded by the Arts Council. The system, which aims to keep artforms like storytelling, traditional music and dance alive amidst challenges such as the cost-of-living crisis, saw an average payout of €6,316 last year. Fintan Vallely, Sárán Ó Maolagáin, Catherine McHugh, Seamas Hyland and Aidan Connolly are among the 15 successful candidates to claim the prize. The funding can cover important personal costs such as venue/ studio hiring, publication, distribution and administrative costs for these artists. A spokesperson described these projects as “vital to the preservation and transmission of traditional oral artforms, which often face unique archival challenges and can struggle to reach general audiences.” IRISH WORKS 2026 The 5th edition of the New Irish Works Exhibition will now be available in the International Centre for the Image until the 9th of August. The showcase aims to support Irish artists, giving 10 chosen delegates the opportunity to display their work to local and international audiences. Admission is completely free and the venue is located on the East Wall in North Dublin. The artwork features both experimental and traditional pieces, and they explore a variety of thought-provoking themes. Each of the 10 jury-selected artists have a bio on the Visual Arts Ireland website that describes the essence of their work. Billy Kendrick’s project for example, specialises in materialisation and explores how materials can be experienced subjectively by different people. The International Centre for the Image, Copers Cross, North Wall and admission is free. Open Tuesday-Sunday. www.image.museum DUBLIN BIKES Dublin City Council is aiming to replace the DublinBike scheme with a new system from 2027 onwards. Under the current scheme, which is enrolled on behalf of the council by French company JCDecaux, subscribers pay an annual €35 fee for 30 minutes of free riding around Dublin across their fleet of around 1600 bikes. The proposed new system will see the introduction of around 4,000 bikes under a uniform scheme. The details of its enrollment are unclear, but Dublin City councillor Feljin Jose said that any change “has to result in an affordable and scalable system”. Dublin bikes has been a remarkably successful scheme since its introduction in 2009 and has made the inner city more accessible amidst growing concerns over congestion. ZEN A Zen meditation seminar will be held in the Unitarian Church in Stephens Green by Shodo Harada Roshi, an abott of the Sogenji Monastery. The talk aims to show how Zen practice can be used to be present in the modern world. Roshi is renowned worldwide for his preaching in Buddhism cultures and practices, and founded the International Zen OneDrop Community, an organisation that aims to help people achieve presence and peace in modern life.
