rim Director, DLSC D ENMARK Denmark’s new national business cluster for life science and welfare technology was officially established in December 2020 as an association under the name Danish Life Science Cluster (DLSC). is a partnership between current cluster organizations, five universities (University of Copenhagen, DTU, Aarhus University, Aalborg University and University of Southern Denmark), five GTS departments (FORCE Technology, Bioneer, Alexandra Institute, Teknologisk Institut, DHI), the five Danish 14 regions, the Danish municipalities and Lif, DI, DE, Dansk Biotek, Medicoindustrien and Danish Care. The goal of the new cluster is to form a platform for collaboration between knowledge institutions, the health sector and companies. The collaboration must contribute to supporting Danish companies to create the best solutions within life science and welfare technology for Danish and international markets. ”We have a lot of useful knowledge in our research and teaching institutions – and we have a business community that can benefit from this knowledge. But in Denmark we have not been quite good enough to share the public research with the businesses, or to create new companies to benefit from the research. But with the DLSC, we now have a national platform that will form the framework for the collaboration between knowledge institutions, business and the health area,” says Bjarke Bak Christensen, interim director of DLSC and department director at Denmark’s Technical University (DTU). In the coming months, the organization will establish itself physically with a presence in five regional hubs, BioPeople, Copenhagen Health Cluster, Life Science Innovation North Denmark, MedTech Innovation Consortium and Welfare Tech. These business clusters already have a strong international network that helps Danish companies to foreign markets. This international matchmaking will be expanded in the future, states DLSC. The academic focus areas in the new life science cluster will be digitization and health data, personal treatment, green transition and agility, i.e. to be prepared for new challenges – eg COVID-19.
