SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2019 INTERVIEW, SCHOOL COLL
ABORATION, DAN WILLIX, SITE MANAGER TYRESÖ ” Tell us about your cooperation with vocational schools as of today? Today, I’m a part of the MBC-board for Fredrika Bremer. We have a good and active collaboration with the school as well as with Värmdö high school. We tend to prioritize students from these school, nut we rarely say no to other schools. There are always students on site in Tyresö. How come you chose to engage in school collaborations? Because that is how I came to join this business as well. To be in an environment with adults through an internship, to take responsibility and to adapt to specific times… That was all new to me, my alarm clock was 10 years old but in an unbroken box. I was never going to finish school and graduated if it wasn’t for the internship. I learned to value actual work instead of always taking the easy way. The internship meant a lot to me. What do you find to be most important in your collaboration with vocational schools? That the students feel like there’s hope and someone to believe in them. That they feel that there’s a reason to studying, so that there’s enough energy to push on through. This is very much a question about the society. A lot of these kids come from harsh backgrounds with low grades. If they get to feel – the way I felt – that there is adults that actually believe in them, then they’re going to fix cars instead of breaking into them. There is more to it, society wise, than just getting a profession. These kids learn how to actually live. The mentor becomes a role model that many of them lacks in their life. What do you think is Bavarias responsibility towards the students vocational training? Our job is to make demands and still motivate. The target for me is that the student, after finishing school, is ready for work life. If the students follow a technician without the chance to act independently, they won’t be ready to shoulder the responsibility of an employment. They won’t understand what it means. We will take our responsibility as an industry. That is done by offering a good and thorough education, whilst daring to let the students act independently in the latter parts of their internship, that we let them carry out their own work. What’s your best memory from the school collaboration? There was this one student on an IA-program who got an offered an internship at my place through Fredrika Bremer. He really struggled with school. Today, he’s managing the workshop and he’s doing great. He called me a while ago and thanked me for the internship, told me that he would have never gotten where he is today without it. That’s fantastic! 29 ERIC SERRA, WORKSHOP MANAGER VÄLLINGBY We at Hedin Bil has some work left to do within this area. There are initiatives, but mainly through local enthusiasts from within the organization, like the example with our site in Vällingby – Interview with Erik Serra, Service executive, Vällingby. Tell us about your collaboration with Arbetsförmedlingen (the unemployment office). PA go here a couple of years ago through a school internship. The unemployment office was involved since PA has a mental disorder that manifests in mental wariness. When he began coming here, he was really introverted and reserved, and to start working was a really tough adaptation for him. He never attended any activities outside of work and did not feel safe with the group. We noted that PA was benefiting from steady routines and some helpful colleagues created a safe environment for him. We invested our time in teaching him underlying routines, that is a bit tougher for him to learn. For every new thing that PA learned, we had to create a new set of routines, which is a bit different to the rest of us, but it really pays of today. As of today, PA helps himself to the day to day routines. He’s joking around and is a natural part of the group. He’s trying new things and is really committed to learn, he’s even taking courses on his spare time. He wants to prove to himself and to others that he can do everything. It’s really great to see. What’s your thoughts on the time to come regarding PA’s personal development? He’ll always going to be able to do a thorough job. He’s a key player to us and he contributes to the group a great deal. He’s placing demands on his surroundings which improves the group. Differences enriches, it helps the coworkers grow. You’ve also kept a dialogue with PA’s mom about his development, could you tell us about that? Since PA has made great progress with us and is as appreciated in the group as he is, we felt that it was important to communicate this to his family as well. We invited his mother to our workplace and talked about his development. She was very happy for the description we gave and over the fact that he had been given the chance to work and grow with us. We have a common goal to make this as good as possible, and that’s why it only felt natural to invite PA’s mother. It was a good meeting, a powerful meeting.
