Mistra Digital Forest Annual Report 2021 1
MISTRADIGITALFOREST SVERKER DANIELSSON Mistra Dig
ital Forest develops digital tools for Swedish forestry. These can be digital maps with several active layers, filled with detailed information about the standing forest. They can also be operational tools such as smart decision support that facilitates the work of the forester, it can be increased automation in machines or tools to increase understanding of forest development. Another example is digital sustainability evaluations that use appropriate, available data sources. We Swedes value the forest highly in several ways. We see the forest both as a wonderful recreational area and as an important producer of materials for bio-based products that give us economic prosperity – and not least as a climate hero, capturing just over 140 million tons of CO2/year through photosynthesis.* Our aim in increasing knowledge about the forest and in developing smart tools, is to benefit all of these areas. This means encouraging sustainable development in forestry, where we strive for continuous economic, social and environmental improvements. Great progress has been made in the programme and you can read about some of this in the following pages. All of them concern improvements in forestry that create increased opportunities for sustainable development.
