I am very much interested in the history of the area I live and been involved in local community initiatives such as collecting rubbish along the canal and local resident groups. I am a full-time carer to my wonderful husband who has an acquired brain injury and in 2020 my husband and I moved into a Council complex on Charlemont Mall overlooking the canal. This has led to a rekindling of my love of photography. There are currently photo boards by the canal at Charlemont - these photos were taken by one photographer. I think it would be nice if other photographers, particularly locals, could be used for these photo boards. I am sending you on some of my photos, would welcome anyone who might be interested to check out my instagram and look forward to hearing about new initiatives for the canals.” @dublincityjacq NEW MURAL AT PORTOBELLO HARBOUR A new mural at Portobello Harbour, inspired by Irish and Polish folk art, has been created by a Polish artist Aga Grandowicz and an Irish artist Una Woods, as part of the PolskaÉire Festival 2021. The project is the initiative of the Embassy of Poland in Dublin, in celebration of 30 years of the Embassy’s existence, in partnership with Dublin City Council and Waterways Ireland The former Lord Mayor of Dublin, Hazel Chu, said: “Let it be a reminder that the ties between the Polish community and the Irish people stay strong and will remain so in the years to come. Over the last 15 years we have welcomed over 100,000 Polish people here in Ireland – during that time they have contributed significantly to the prosperity and cultural diversity of our country – for this we say THANK YOU.” Ambassador Anna Sochańska said: “I am honoured to celebrate Irish-Polish relations in the form of this uplifting colourful mural inspired by Irish and Polish folk art. The Irish shamrock and the Polish floral motives from folk paper cutouts perfectly symbolize the two cultures and how they interlink. The two birds, the starling and the robin, taking centre stage of the design, relate so well to the two countries’ natural heritage. We are very grateful to our local partners, Dublin City Council and Waterways Ireland, for their support.” ONE LOCK FURTHER The open-air gallery of commissioned images of canal life pops up, by Broombridge Station in Cabra/Ashtown on the Royal Canal and around the 9th lock on the Grand Canal near Clondalkin / Ronanstown, from the middle of August with photographer Thérèse Rafter’s series of images, some of which we featured in our June edition (192). @onelockfurther
