Summer is here and the big gigs are moving into fields but please don’t forget to support your local small or mid size venue; if they were to fold tomorrow you’d sure as hell miss them. This month’s cover stars have a fierce pedigree; Ruth Clinton is an acclaimed artistic dynamo: a visual artist, writer and musician who has the honour of being the first musician to appear twice on our front cover (she is also a member of Landless who were our June 2024 cover stars), drummer John Dermody was sticksman for the mighty Jimmy Cake and of course Cormac MacDiarmada is one of the revered Lankum quartet. That doesn’t mean jackshit tho if you dont produce the music to bolster that pedigree but Poor Creature have released a debut album doozy in All Smiles Tonight, a record which should push them into hearts and minds of music fans across the globe. We were there when they supported OXN in The Sugar Club on Halloween night, 2024 (one of their first gigs?) and the signs were obvious that they were a special act. Characterized by a unique blend of traditional Irish folk and experimental sounds, they create immersive soundscapes that are both ethereal and transportative, reinterpreting centuries-old songs while infusing them with contemporary relevance. 3 S E V A R N Ä E M N K T
