The Goo 1
Words: Niall McGuirk PUNK Dublin based Skate punk
s Bartape are playing their last ever gig in McDowells on October 3 with Stanton’s Grave, ADH and Judge Rudy. The band play an irreverent brand of music but have been very active in the Dublin diy scene for the past few years. It will be a shame to see them gone. The following night the punk keeps coming to McDowells with Bad Mothers Union, The Spudguns, Mart, Coathanger Solution and Jobseekers all playing for your tenner admission. Jeffrey Lewis is back in the Grand Social on October 13. This time with the Voltage. Jeffrey Lewis has been reinventing himself every couple of years for the past lifetime of music but always has his roots in lo-fi indie rock. His lyrics and artwork provide a soundscape to a life in the slipstream. If you have discovered a way of being in 3 places at the one time will you let me know as October 17 is a great night to be alive in Dublin (aren’t they all really but this one is extra special). Grace Petrie is bringing her political sharp edge to the Workmans and Chewie are playing their debut album, Marrowbone Lane in full in the Academy with girlfriend opening. It will be interesting to see the band in such a venue as any time I have seen them there has been no bouncers keeping an eye on proceedings as people launch themselves from their stage. Hands Up Who Wants to Die who have members of bands such as No Spill Blood, Wild Rocket, 44 Shifting and ten Past Seven are showcasing their glorious post punk noise in the Button Factory. They are playing with Cork Based ANA PALINDROME and Northern irish noise-niks Stratford Rise as part of “CURVEBALL: A LITANY OF FAILURES” It’s proving to be some weekend all round as London hardcore punks False Reality are in McDowells the night after (Oct 18th). Also bringing the hardcore noise are If It Bleeds from Belfast, along with Dublin kids Poser and Bansheed Arcadian Nights is on in the Grand Social that same day with a huge selection of all that is good in Dublin punk and beyond. Inner Terrestials from the UK, Skuntz, The Seventh Shroud, Coathanger Solution, The Nilz, ADH, Peer Pleasure, Arcadian Shadows, jobseekers, Joe Maxi! And the Dubtones are all playing on the night. It will be some collection of raucous tunes. Doors open at 3pm. The following night, in the same venue, Pete Holidai is launching his Electric Jukebox album with Tony St Leger playing on the night too. Pete’s album is a mix of Roxy Muxic, the Sweet and modern day punk and I will be there bopping my head along. On the 21st, Derry punks Cherym will be bringing their revolution to the Grand Social if you’ve any energy left. Some music to listen to Burnt Tapes - New Lungs - Wiretap Records New Lungs is Burnt Tapes at their most vulnerable, loud, and lyrically raw. The London-via-Athens punks lean deeper into their gruff, melodic sound — blending heartbreak, bitterness, and introspection with cathartic choruses and downbeat honesty. This is a record about regret, resilience, and the heavy lifting it takes to move forward — one night, one fight, one breath at a time. Magic of the Marketplace - Jealous Moon - Jsntgm “Are we machines that can’t change anything, If we believed could we change everything” The title song here is a heartfelt plea asking us all not to give in. In times when that is the prevailing feeling I have felt I have been able to reach out to this song. Magic of the Marketplace takes that Leatherface gruff punk to offer up a mid paced punk banger here. 4 songs in total with a similar clarion call. Lead singer Andy is the head honcho behind just say no to Government music and he has been sailing that boat solo for many years. He has taken many of his favourite bands like Stay Clean Jolene, the Great St Louis and Husker Du, already tattooed to his sleeve and mixed them together in this. Guilhem - A Good One - Bandcamp Atom and his package burst onto the scene while ago. One man and his guitar with a drum machine and a friend Atom sounded at times goofy but always with a tune in hand. Guilhem brings the bits of Atom out but mixed with Superchunks of guitar riffs and Melodie’s.
