nographics and Ping Pong Disco round up what is bound to be a nostalgic night of disco tripping. Notes From The Underground - The Grand Social - Oct 12th For a brief few years in the 1980’s The Underground on Dame St was the beating heart of the nascent Irish Indie music scene. The Baggot Inn had the established acts but the legendary basement venue was where the sons and daughters of the Velvet Underground, Iggy, The Cramps, The Cure, Joy Division and The Smiths socialised while listening to the new wave of bands inspired by these sounds. A House, Something Happens, Stars Of Heaven and tons more all graced its tiny stage and tonight the team behind the fab Punks Listen book (Niall McGuirk and Michael Murphy) curate a eulogy of remembrance of things past with panel discussions and live music from some of the protagonists of this wonderful time and place. Jeffrey Lewis - The Grand Social - Oct 13th The American alt rock icon returns with his current outfit High Voltage. Lewis never disappoints, always treating his adoring audience to a show thats full of energy, humour and cracking tunes. Check out his merch table for a selection of DIY zines and comics. Every cent helps. Ger Eaton - NCH Studio - Oct 23rd Dubliner Eaton has played and fronted many acts over the year (The Pale, Jack L, Las Vegas Basement to name a few) but tonight sees him launch his new album, Seasons Change, with a very special performance in the hallowed NCH Studio. The record is a beauty; full of gentle pastoral sonics and some fine melodies so we are in for a treat tonight. Jesca Hoop ing public will kop on that Shakalak are one of our finest live acts. It’s deadly mix of dub grooves, space rock guitars and keys and - the clincher - a double barrelled frontman attack of wisecracking singer Fin Divily and poet-cum-MC John Cummins. No doubt they will go all out to make this a Halloween night to remember. Maruja - Whelans - Oct 31st A brilliant new act that fuse punk with jazz to make a thrilling cacophony of noise, Maruja have just released their outstanding debut album to rave reviews. This will be packed to the rafters and is bound to be an I-was-there gig. Natural Information Society - NCH - Oct 29th Im a sucker for experimental, out there Jazz and this gang are one of its finest exponents. Jesca Hoop / Kate Stables / Lail Arad / Richard Sears on Piano & Special Guests: Lisa Hannigan / Loah - The Olympia - Oct 30th A real treat for Joni Mitchell fans as a fabled array of superb vocalists from home and abroad take on the Canadian legends songbook. Shakalak - The Grand Social - Oct 31st Sooner or later the general gig goSigns - The Sugar Club - Oct 31st Louis Scully has ran some of the most innovative and fun club nights in our city over the last 15 years. Never afraid to take a chance the former DJ has been quiet of late but this re-emergence looks like a doozy with a Sun Ra Tribute by some of the finest jazzers in the country, the fab Brazilian / Irish neo-soul / jazz-funk outfit Oceanna, and with a spooky nod to the night thats in it, a performance from the eerie cabaret of Monsieur Pompier’s Travelling Freakshow. 5
