NOV-DEC 2022 NIALL MCGUIRK AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS
The Olympia THIS IS A SONG FOR ALL THE WOMEN, TRANS PEOPLE AND WEIRDOS Back in Ireland for the second time in 6 months but this time headlining, the band brought chaos to the Olympia tonight. A venue upgrade and a date change meant little to the packed out crowd who sang along and smiled right throughout the night. Amy sped around the stage like a caged animal let free for the evening, only stopping to rest when a blow up doll was thrown from GARRY BAYLON TROPHY WIFE The Soundhouse Having previously seen Trophy Wife at the ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’ festival in Whelan’s in August, I was keen to catch her again, this time at The Soundhouse, a venue I haven’t been to in such a long time I had forgotten what a cracking little venue it is. The small but enthusiastic crowd GARRY BAYLON TILT #15: SKINNER, LAST APOLLO, SEARCH RESULTS Button Factory John Barker celebrated 3 years of his Tilt showcase night by hosting Tilt #15 in its familiar home of The Button Factory and with free entry and three bands to enjoy, what else would you be doing on a Tuesday night. It is a testament to John’s love and knowledge of the young Irish music scene that he chose three of the best from the current impressive crop of young bands performing the Dublin music circuit today to mark the event. Search Results kicked off proceedings and impressed many with their immensely catchy, gloriously lofi Indie musings. Last Apollo were up next and it’s not hard to see why Lucy Rice and Co are being heavily touted for success as they glided effortlessly through a set of singalong indie bangers. It was left to Skinner to blow out the candles on the cake and he didn’t disappoint. Utilising the big Button Factory stage to his advantage, the young producer/writer/performer and his red hot band gave a masterclass in cool. A thrilling melange of off kilter New York No Wave circa 1981 and punchy pop circa 2022 oozed from the stage and the crowd lapped it up. Barker’s Dublin City FM radio show on Monday nights is an essential addition to the dwindling pool of shows that exclusively espouse home grown talent so its up to us to tune in and support it. Happy Birthday! were warmed up by two acts, Sarah Crean and Sunburn, who I will hopefully review in their own right in near the future, before Trophy Wife, aka Ruby Smyth, and her band, took to the stage. A fast rock musical intro, to grab the crowd’s attention, ended abruptly and was followed by a series of soulful funky pop songs. ‘Birthday’ and ‘Beauty Queen’ in particular, taken from the debut EP ‘Art’, are both very groovy the audience. Bryce was calmness personified on drums as the band played song after song at breakneck speed. I was left staring and wondering how he wasn’t staggering for air. Fergus on bass complete with palest body I’ve ever seen provided the solid rhythm that was the basis for all the songs while Dec on his near flying V guitar chopped through their punk rock AC/DC set. songs with heaps of soul and funk. A new song ‘Sentimental’ took the gig down a rockier path before ‘Italy’ - from the debut EP - reverted back to a more soulful groove, perfectly illustrating the range of genres on “This is a song for all the women, trans people and weirdos” they screamed in defiance and gave voice to so many people to prove that music isn’t about pin-ups and being on stage can be obtained by those who don’t have their hair cut to perfection. The band proved it tonight on the large Olympia stage, almost anti-rock stars but filling up the venue perfectly. display. There’s no real definitive Trophy Wife sound, more like a collection of sounds that cover the art rock of 10cc to the funk pop of Lizzo and all impressively performed. Trophy Wife are definitely ones to watch out for. PAGE 17
