There are amazing gigs happening every night of the week over the next month or two and if you add in Xmas parties and the World Cup into the craziness it’s probably fair to say that the city will be at bursting point, definitely a great time to be alive! Issue number six is as diverse as they come with a line up featuring musicians from the world of Trad, Classical, Electro, Indie and Metal. Our cover stars are Columbia Mills who have just released their third (and best) album Heart Of A Nation and who play their biggest hometown gig to date in the Academy on November 25th. We are delighted to feature an interview with Ryan McAdams, the principal conductor of the revered Crash Ensemble who are celebrating 25 years at the forefront of fearless creativity and collaboration. Le Boom have also been groundbreakers in their own sphere and with the recent worldwide resurgence in clubbing they have been busy performing live at secret parties throughout Europe and making waves in the US, all which leads nicely up to their late night headline show at the 3Olympia on Friday December 2nd. (btw: please bring back the Midnight at the Olympia gigs!). The metal scene attracts our country’s most ardent and loyal fanbase but is one that is rarely featured in the media. We have been honoured to have Overdrive’s head honcho Oran O’Beirne as one of our contributors since our first issue and here he shines a light on a classic band within the genre, the continuously hapless Type O Negative whose classic LP Dead Again finally sees the light on vinyl. The resurgence of trad thankfully continues apace and we feature two of the hardest working men in showbiz, Ispíní na hÉireann (The Sausages of Ireland), as they release their debut album. One of our most popular columns is Conor Farrell’s celebration of classic album anniversaries - The Grape Vinyl - which this month features Grandmaster Flash’s game changing album The Message and we are also delighted to welcome two new columnists to the team; Greg Whelan on Jazz and Sarah O’Sullivan on Clubbing. Finally, kudos to Sunil Sharpe, Robbie Kitt and the rest of the Give Us The Night crew for their immense work on the campaign to change our draconian licensing laws. As we all know the clubbing scene has been hardest hit over the last few years but this provides a glimmer of hope for late night revellers, DJ’s, technicians and staff working within the clubbing sphere. We sincerely hope that the powers that be also make it a priority to provide safe transit for everyone and ensure working conditions and pay rates are in line with current trends. We also hope these laws will see other cultural institutions like art galleries etc keeping their doors open later to accommodate modern work timetables and patrons looking for alternatives to our dominant pub culture. It will take a while for things to settle in and there’s bound to be some messy situations but overall it’s a great step forward for Ireland as both a progressive society and as a more controlled nighttime environment.
