Gig: Father John Misty Making 80s-inspired music?
Well, everyone’s doing that, just look at any Spotify new music playlist for proof. Making 60s-inspired music? Ok, that’s a bit trickier, but you know, not so unusual. Making music that swipes a significant slice of its inspiration from silent era film soundtracks? Well that’s the kind of left field move that can only have come from Father John Misty. Josh Tillman’s latest album, Chloë and the Next 20th Century, looks back in time for some of its sonic structure, but the singer’s key trademarks, his lyrical cleverness and the sheer quality of his songwriting, remain very much present. He comes to Cirkus at the end of February. The exhibition After Image is a taste of that process taken into the modern age – the artist Peter Geschwind uses light and sound to create visuals that appear to the viewer as real. His animations here dance like the real thing, a feast for the senses, even as they prompt the audience to question theirs.
