unching a free open call for participants in Momentum: Skateboarding & Creativity Intensive, a bold, unique, week-long creative programme uniting young people in Dublin’s skateboarding community through photography, animation, graphic design, zine-making, and visual Storytelling. This free project & course is open to skaters and aspiring creatives aged 15–19 under the guidance of acclaimed visual artists Phil Evans, Rich Gilligan, and Darragh Shanahan. Participants will experiment, collaborate, and create work that captures the energy, diversity, and attitude of skate culture, while building a wider network of like-minded skaters. The application deadline is midnight, Sunday 5 October. To apply, send a one-page letter of interest, 7–10 examples of your creative work (photographs, drawings, designs, animation frames, or links to self-produced videos) and a photo of your own skateboard to darragh@ photomuseumireland.ie. Participants under 18 will require parental/guardian consent if selected. SOME GOOD PLANNING NEWS Great to see that a €100 million plan to redevelop St Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre in Dublin has been turned down by An Coimisiún Pleanála. The refusal overturns a grant of permission owners DTDL Ltd secured from Dublin City Council in December 2023. An Coimisiún Pleanála said the proposed scheme “lacks a strong sense of original aesthetic and would not achieve a sufficiently high standard of placemaking, urban design and architecture at this key city centre location”. DUBLIN PUBS Our good pal Donal Fallon is bringing out a book next month, The Dublin Pub:A Social and Cultural History, which reveals hidden histories of world-renowned public houses such as The Long Hall, Grogan’s and The Palace along with the stories of Dublin’s early houses, gay bars and shebeens. Drawing from rich archival collections, The Dublin Pub includes previously unpublished photographs as well as oral recollections that bring the history of the Dublin pub to life. It already sounds like a great Xmas pressie! We’ll be chatting to Donal in depth for our next issue. NEWPARK ACADEMY OF MUSIC GETS A NEW HOME Great news as The Newpark Academy of Music and the Institute of Art, Design & Technology Dún Laoghaire (IADT) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at fostering collaboration in education, research and engagement between the two institutions. This MOU will leverage the expertise and unique strengths of staff in both IADT and Newpark Academy, creating collaborative and development opportunities for the talented students and alumni of both institutions across programmes and activities in Sound Design, Music Production and Performance and Audio Technologies. THE REAL OSCAR WILDE Laura Brennan’s new book examines the parents and childhood of Oscar Wilde as well as his education at university both in Dublin and Oxford while looking into how Oscar’s politics, travel and aesthetic lifestyle helped create the poet, writer and playwright. It also takes a focused look at Oscar Wilde as a husband and father, explores the events and relationships that lead to Wilde’s arrest and sentencing in 1895 and examines Wilde’s experiences as a prisoner as well as his short life after his release from prison. Another great addition to the stacked Wildean canon. 10
