Bland mycket annat. pring has sprung! And as part of becoming a Swede, I feel it is my duty to talk about the weather. After this particularly dark and dreary winter deprived of that sparkling snow showering the land in its bright white, the dawn of a new season could not arrive soon enough. I am in a temperate heaven! Spring is a rather remarkable time in Sweden. The land and the people come back to life. Just as the bare trees and plants begin to bud and blossom, so it is with Swedes! All of a sudden the narrow streets in our community are bustling. Kids—and adults—are bubbling over with enthusiasm and cheer, fresh out of their hibernation. Even the seemingly grumpy lady who lives down the street from us walks by with a smile, a wave, and a little extra sway in her step. My neighbor stands on his balcony shirtless and joy-filled, powerwashing the roof under a clear blue sky. Everyone’s cabin fever has begun to subside and the entire atmosphere feels so…transformed. Meanwhile, in South Florida, when the temperature drops to ‘Swedish Spring’ standards, people are building fires, dusting off their fur-lined boots, huddling together closely under heavy blankets, shivering. I must be adapting well, because this Florida girl couldn’t wait to get outside and feel the sun on her skin at the first opportunity, even if it required a lightweight cardigan. That enveloping warmth just seems to diminish the sporadic bursts of chilly wind that accompany it. I have grown quite fond of learning old and dying svenska words or those that have no direct translation in other languages, and gökotta is my latest intrigue. Anyone I ask gives me a loose definition, and no two are alike. My King says, “Ask my mother. She has probably heard of it.” But from what I have gathered, and in my own words, it seems to embody this appreciation of nature as we observe a change in season—with the sounds of the birds singing you haven't heard in what feels like ages, long walks with pauses to admire new blooms and life along the path, waking early and longing to go outside for no reason in particular, filling our gardens and patios with new green life, nurturing and cultivating it. Gökotta, to me, encapsulates my first experience of Spring in Sweden. It is all about new beginnings, this literal and figurative rebirth. Plants vanish in winter only to resurface in springtime. And some things, they don’t come back. They aren’t meant to. Nature has run its course. But in the rot and decay of last year’s flowers, the most fertile soil is born and will give life to something new. And so it is with life. Så är det. How fortunate we are to be alive, to be here to experience another season, to wake up every morning to a new day filled with possibilities. How grateful we should be to have our loved ones by our sides as the world spins on its axis. This past February, my King’s farmor died, after nearly 101 years of life. Though I only met her a few times, I can say with confidence that she was grateful for every day—to the very last. Can you imagine? A hundred years of hugs and kisses, of seasons, of losses and gains, of changes and life lessons? What a privilege! Let us take some time to feel gratitude for our lives and loved ones. Let us tell the people we care about how much we care about them. Some of us may not live to see another Spring. I TEXT: CARLY HALE HANDLA ALLA DINA FAVORITER PÅ NÄTET!
