e the most recent recipients of the August Prize in fiction, non-fiction and children & YA! fiction Patrik Svensson (b. 1972) The Gospel of Eels. Sons, Fathers, and the World’s Most Mysterious Fish Publisher Albert Bonniers förlag Rights Bonnier Rights The jury’s citation A dizzying story with philosophical and existential overtones about the origins of the endangered eel and its place alongside humankind, and myths that carry the reader into deep water both literally and figuratively. Patrik Svensson lets us follow the eel from the Sargasso Sea, via the smörgåsbord buffet all the way into his soul where – thanks to his father – it has a very special place. This is also a story about a father and a son, and how their love of the eel tied them together in what was often a relationship without words. fiction Marit Kapla (b. 1971) Osebol Publishing house Teg Publishing Rights Partners in Stories The jury’s citation With unmistakable feeling and respect, Marit Kapla creates a whole universe in her literary account of the village of Osebol. The testimonies of individuals are woven into lyrical songs interspersed with different voices. The discussion of the place reflects both painful change and an uncertain future. The fate of rural communities and the world is embodied in life in a small village in Värmland. Children & YA Oskar Kroon (b. 1980) Waiting for the Wind Publisher Brombergs Bokförlag Rights Koja Agency The jury’s citation There is a lot to love about Waiting for the Wind. Foremost, perhaps, its linguistic lightness of touch, its poetic density and tone. However, the fine characterisation of the protagonist Vinga and her grandfather, two obstinate and solitary beings, is also achieved with a warmth that is anything but stereotypical. Strong but lonely, we see Vinga grow as she works to repair and launch a boat, as well as through the blossoming of her friendship and romantic attachment to her peer, Rut.
