Not only Spanish citizens fought in the war. Young people from various countries, among them Sweden, arrived to fight on the side of the republicans. Anna Jörgensdotter’s novel Solidaries is a comprehensive novel about war and the lives of some of those who followed in its wake. Ingemar, a young man from Gävle, travels to Spain, leaving Klara pregnant with their child at home, and meeting a woman called Conxa in Barcelona. Anna Jörgensdotter has often depicted people who are involved in historical or political movements, portraying the impact this has on them, their emotions and their way of thinking. She portrays those who don’t always choose the easy route, giving her portraits complexity and believability.
