The narrative in Elin Olofsson’s fourth book is set in the community of Krokom, about twenty kilometres outside Östersund, in the county of Jämtland. It’s 1949, the war is over but its repercussions are still being felt. Uli, a young German woman, arrives looking for ‘Elin Pettersson’, whose name she found in Germany. The visit becomes the start of a year-long, twisting chain of events that shake the lives of many of the people in the small community to the core – a fleeing German soldier, the village shopkeeper, an old crofter couple, a few young men… Elin Olofsson has a great tenderness for the sometimes forgotten countryside and for bygone times, and she succeeds in making the reader realise that nothing happens in isolation.
