67 Autumn 2017 Beneath the Beast’s Fur In her You
ng Adult novel Beneath the Beast’s Fur Klara Krantz has found a singular voice and spirit. With no holds barred, she scrutinizes her main character Signe and portrays her warts and all: sweaty, yearning, anxious, sad, horny, lonely. Signe is not one of those heroes who are easy to fall for. But she’s human and as such terribly interesting. The book describes how Signe and Joel meet online and through hours of chatting get to know each other. Now they’re in love, and are planning to meet up in real life. The only problem is that Joel thinks he’s chatting to cute Frida from Karlstad, and not to ugly Signe from his own school, who he normally wouldn’t even look at. Beneath the Beast’s Fur is a flawless study of our human flaws, and the clumsy, selfish, fumblingthrough-life period that is adolescence. It’s incredibly skilfully done, with bold, fresh use of language.
