I love the communal buzz around the event, I love seeing the delegates race between venues, checking out the acts with the audible buzz, the excitement and nervousness of the musicians as they embark on their voyages of discovery and the audience lapping up this yearly treat where we can see and hear 50 of our most promising acts over 2 days in some of our best venues. Yes, Whelans Ones To Watch offers a similar set up but IMW is different. The pressure is on. The A&R person is leaning against the bar. The publisher is standing to the side of the stage. The agent is standing at the back. All are surveying the scene. Waiting to see if the tip off rings true. The class of 2025 are nothing if not confident so this, allied to great sound in the venues, puts the artists in a great position from the off. And, look it’s not the end of the world if that record company exec doesn’t dig your music (sure wasn’t he the one that passed on Fontaines DC a few years back) there’ll be others that do, passionately.
