o start this column is to discuss what can only be described as a historic moment for Irish rap music down at All Together Now festival earlier in the month. Rory Sweeney and the Irish Hash Mafia crew put on a show on the Saturday afternoon at The Last City stage with a performance that people are still buzzing about. Unfortunately I didn’t get to catch the full 3 hour set as I was doing interviews for the mag but what I did see was Belfast grime MC kill his set. The vidoes of this set are crazy with some of the country’s finest rappers such as Curtisy, Lil Skag & Ahmed, With Love. blessing festival goers with their lyrical prowess and all round infectious energy. It was great to see one of the most talked about rappers in Dublin right now in Sugaboo joining forces with the Hash Mafia for for this performance. This was a long time coming and a hugely deserved moment for Rory Sweeney as he continues to be one of the most pivotal and talented figures in the Irish music scene. Speaking of Ahmed, With Love. there was a big announcement from him last month that the infamous ‘Clash At The Quays’ will be returning on the 6th of September. The event which is taking place at the complex in Dublin incorporates live music and wrestling two of my favourite things in this world so I can’t wait for this one. On the night there will be performances from some of the best acts the country has to offer such as Ahmed, With Love himself Sloucho, & Vatican Jail. In particular I can’t wait to see London MC Kibo perform at clash, I caught him in the rocket space performing at the Road to Lokomania event which was a warm up for the main event on the 6th of September. I have heard many great stories about the first edition of this event so I can’t wait to attend. One of the biggest album drops of the past month was when the king of surprise album releases Tyler The Creator completely out of nowhere announced that he would be releasing a brand new album titled ‘Don’t Tap The Glass’. The album is definitely the funkiest record he has put out to date with a lot of disco elements to this one. I really enjoyed it when it came out and still have it in my rotation a month on. Forget surprise album releases though. In a recent interview with music guru Zane Lowe during a conversation about great new music, Zane told Tyler about the new album from Dublin artist For Those I Love. It’s crazy to see one of the biggest artists in the world right now get recommended a local act and at the same time it is a testament to his ability as one of the most talented Irish artists out there right now. I just hope Tyler takes this recommendation from a trusted and wise music journalist like Zane Lowe seriously. Carving The Stone is the new album in question and it’s superb. More on this next month. 39
