igo - The Grand Social - Sept 1st Texan guitarist Pedigo, influenced by John Fahey and experimental elements like prog-rock and psychedelic music, draws inspiration from both American primitive guitar and contemporary music. He cites influences from prog-rock bands like King Crimson, the heavy textures of Led Zeppelin, and the experimental rap of Bladee, incorporating micro-sampling and a sense of abstraction. One for the guitar anorak in your life. Elly D - Whelans Upstairs - Sept 5th The Dubliner launches her debut solo album, Tomorrow Be Kind tonight. It’s been a while in the making but initial listens reveal a very accomplished piece of work that leans heavily into the indie/pop/rock genre with Elly’s voice as the clincher. Bleech/Theatre/Circa - The Sound House - Sept 6th One of the venues 6 week run of RAW gigs (Rising Artist Watch) tonight’s line up is as strong as it gets. Bleech and Circa both produce a bright, indie pop sound that could be filling stadiums soon while Theatre provided the darkness. Problem Patterns - The Grand Social - Sept 7th It’s almost impossible not to love this Belfast punk quartet. Winners of the Northern Ireland Music Prize in 2024, the band are a ray of sunshine, an injection of energy who play tuneful power punk killers that never fail to fill a floor. 4 Far Caspian - The Grand Social - Sept 8th Far Caspian is the project of Irish musician Joel Johnston who has just released his third album Autofiction on his own Tiny Library Records. If you like classic alt indie with an American bent - think Grandaddy or Sparklehorse - chances are you’ll enjoy Johnston’s gilt edged tunes. Rhiannon Giddens / Francesco Turrisi - w/ Seckou Keita - National Concert Hall - Sept 10th Nicknamed “the Hendrix of the Kora”, Seckou Keita has arguably become one of the most influential and inspiring Kora players of his generation so a team up with two-time GRAMMY Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning singer and instrumentalist Giddens and Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi certainly gets the pulse racing. This will be sensational. Scott Flanigan - The Cooler @ The Complex - Sept 11th A Doctor of music no less, Belfast man Scott Flanigan is one of the foremost keyboard players on the Irish jazz scene. He performs regularly across Europe and has recently performed with Van Morrison, the Ulster Orchestra, Larry Coryell, Jean Toussaint, Jim Mullen and Linley Hamilton. These Cooler gigs are fast becoming the place to hear the best of new jazz in Dublin so get in to The Complex pronto. lowkey problem patterns Search Results - Whelans - Sept 12th This is a band that really brings me back to the heady days of 80’s Dublin when The Underground on Dame St was scenester central. It’s raw, immediate yet cleverly constructed, melodic and just bullshit free. Their new album, Go Mutant, copperfastens their potent DIY reputation with 13 charming sonic vignettes that remind you of no one. Pony Club - United Arts Club - Sept 13th Speaking of heady days, here’s a band that gave us so much joy over the years without the sufficient return they merited. Pony Club (formerly Fixed Stars and Bawl) released some of the finest, most poignant indie pop singles in the Irish musical canon but success eluded them. Tonight they come out for a special edition of Nighthawks (all Nighthawks gigs are special) and it would be remiss of you not to be there. Daddy Long Legs - The Sugar Club - Sept 13th A band that ooze charisma and cool in bucket loads, New York’s finest exponents of the Chicago Blues return to their now spiritual home for another lesson in how rock n roll changed the world. Rún - Curveball @ The Button Factory - Sept 13th Rún’s debut album is reviewed (very positively) further along these pages by our scribe Adhamh O’Caoimh and tonight’s gig showcases the dark, brooding, experimental music of their eponymous
