alvo. The three piece feature Tara Baoth Mooney – sometime Jim Henson voice artist, with a longstanding background in everything from folk and choral music to experimental film-making, Diarmuid MacDiarmada – Nurse With Wound co-conspirator and brother of Lankum’s Cormac, and drummer, sound designer and boy wonder engineer/producer Rian Trench, so the pedigree is immense. Junior Brother - The Grand Social - Sept 13th & 14th Signed to Strap Originals, Pete Doherty’s label, Kerryman Junior Brother launches his new album The End with two intimate gigs in the Northside venue. The record is drenched in Irish folkloric myths and mysteries that find resonance in the instability of contemporary life. Support on the opening night is courtesy of Madra Salach who are creating an audible buzz at the moment while the second night’s guests are the spectral folk duo Anenome. The Dubliners Encore - Gaiety Theatre - Sept 15th - 20th Produced by The Dubliners’ John Sheahan, renowned fiddle player and legendary Irish icon, with the band’s original record producer Phil Coulter as Musical Director, The Dubliners Encore is the official story of the band in their heyday. This new stage show packs 50 years of songs, stories, and craic into a single show and comes recommended wholly on the strength of the people involved. Kilian O’Flangan as Ronnie Drew and James Gallagher as Luke Kelly are top choices so there’s no doubt The Beths that the music will be performed faithfully and with real character. The Beths - Button Factory - Sept 17th & 18th It’s not hard to see why an extra date (17th) was added. The Beths, who hark all the way from New Zealand, are indie royalty, an infectious band of musicians who make brilliant indie music. Plain and simple. It’ll be Vicar St next so if you want to watch dynamite in a small venue don’t miss this. The Underground Youth - The Grand Social - Sept 18th The Berlin-based post-punk band will be showcasing their new album ‘Décollage’ which sees the band evolving a unique sound that has over the years ranged from cinematic lo-fi psychedelia and raw melancholic post-punk to gothic folk-noir. Their trademark ghostly minimalism and sweeping crescendos of noise and melody are still evident however so buckle up for the ride. Michael Rother - Button Factory - Sept 19th Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Michael Rother is a key figure of the innovative music scene originating from Germany in the early 1970s. He was a member of Kraftwerk in 1971 and formed the legendary band NEU! (with Klaus Dinger) and Harmonia (with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius of Cluster) before releasing 10 solo albums and creating music for theatre and films (e.g. Houston and The Robbers). Tonight he performs a selection of NEU!, Harmonia Unique Freaks and Solo Works with a three piece band in tow. Unmissable. Lowkey - The Grand Social - Sept 25th Lowkey is a towering figure of the scene who renews the old tradition of conscious hip-hop activism for the war on terror generation. Fusing politically charged lyrics and deft dissection of topics such as race, war, global poverty and politics with anthemic choruses and unrelentingly energetic performance, Lowkey commands a keen and growing legion of followers. He is part of the super group Mongrel alongside members of the Arctic Monkeys, Babyshambles and Reverend And The Makers and has Noah Chomsky guest on his new album. An artist for these times. Unique Freaks - Anseo - Sept 26th The clue is in the name. This is a band who do nothing the way it’s meant to be. And that is their inherent beauty because Darragh Hansard and Elizabeth Doyle wish it so. They (bravely) changed their name from THEE UFO to the current moniker just as the former was catching fire so there’s a fearlessness at play here and the good news is that this quality is also in the music. Debut album Enjoyment Planted releases the week before this show so the champagne will be flowing. Or maybe it won’t. 5
