The city proudly boasts four establishments on White Guide’s top-25 restaurants in Sweden list with two starred restaurant Vollmers being the brightest shining light. When Scandinavian restaurant guide The White Guide recently held its annual award show Frida Nilsson, chef at MJs, was rewarded with the Rising Star award - an accolade going to young chefs with “the potential to reach both domestic and international fame due to his or hers gastronomic qualities”. We want to present a little guide of what Malmö has to offer when it comes to food and drink so here’s a round up of interesting names to visit in an array of gastronomic categories. Malmö classics Bastard A restaurant that just keeps being among the hottest tickets in town. Awarded with a Bib Gourmand by Guide Michelin Bastard not only offers good value, high quality food, but also a great bistro-feel and atmosphere. Traditionally meat has been the main ingredient but its vegetables are delicious and reason enough to come here. In the summertime one of the best ideas is a Bastard pizza in their courtyard. By 1969 it had become Malmö’s first English pub under the name The Bull’s Eye which got Swedified into its current name Bullen. Today it’s a prime location for all beer lovers and people who enjoy good quality, traditional Swedish, comfort food. During the warmer months there’s the added bonus of the outdoor terrace. Storgatan 35 bullen.nu Kockeriet Perhaps more at home in the Fine Dining category but Kockeriet has quickly turned into a classic dining destination for the culinary inclined in Malmö since its opening in 2015. Tareq Taylor’s creation pays homage to gastronomy and the handcraft behind it while aiming for the staff to create a great atmosphere together with the visiting dining guests. Tareq’s recipe for success is pride, passion, respect and lofty ambitions with a focus on the craft and the raw produce, plus a love for food. Malmös top restaurant aims to highlight the distinct flavours and special characteristics of the Scandinavian soil. They want to marry local and carefully selected produce with modern cooking techniques and take the Scandinavian cuisine to new heights while presenting the region’s distinct seasons. It’s innovative and perfectly balanced presented in an intimate setting in a pretty townhouse. Tegelgårdsgatan 5 vollmers.nu Sture Restaurang Sture has been around for over hundred years. What was formerly a Michelinstarred restaurant with French cooking as a main theme has now seen strong Nordic winds sweep in with the arrival of new head chef Jonas Dellow. Sture offers a memorable gastronomic experience with experimental, modern and well-balanced dishes plus the added bonus of Frida Ringström, awarded with the Swedish Sommelier of the year award in 2018. Star or no star, Sture firmly resides among the very top fine dining-spots in Skåne. Operating, and popularising, the no menu concept where they serve what’s best according to availability, day and mood to ensure unique gastronomic experiences. Experiences that includes tastes from all across the world. Pildammsvägen 17 www.bloominthepark.se Fast/Street Food Casual Street Food The burger boom finally found its way to Malmö too, but regardless of how many new fancy names enter the scene, Casual Street Food still have a firm grip on Malmö’s burger craving crowds. With a love and passion for making “street food” with good, locally sourced, produce, their version of fast food is far from the big American chains.
