This is the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 1
Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award Why is the prize a
warded? The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award aims to give young people around the world access to literature. If the award contributes to more books being translated into more languages, then more children will be able to discover literature that broadens their thoughts, imagination and ideas. In addition to honouring the memory of Astrid Lindgren, the award is therefore a way to contribute to a more democratic and open world. Who is eligible for the award? The prize is awarded to an author, illustrator, storyteller, or person or organisation that works to promote reading for children and young people. Each year, hundreds of candidates are nominated from around the world. The nomination list is published each autumn and is a gold mine for anyone who wants to discover literature from around the globe. Selecting the laureates A 12-member jury has the challenging but enjoyable task of evaluating some of the world’s most prominent candidates each year and selecting one laureate (or several). Rewarding the highest-quality work demands expert knowledge of international children’s and YA literature as well as children’s rights and children’s reading. The jury members include authors, illustrators, literary scholars, librarians, children’s rights experts and one member who represents the family of Astrid Lindgren. To identify the most interesting and creative nominees—and to help broaden perspectives—the jury invite organisations from all over the world to nominate candidates.
