ker. A deadly third left Herman with his par 4. Hogan missed a birdie here by an eyelash, but he had that over par five by Keiser at the eighteenth to work on. When Ben pit- ched his No. 7 iron second twelve feet past the hole Keiser's goose appeared as good as cooked. Hogan aimed a putt that for a moment wore all the brilliant colorings of a birdie imported from Brazil. The ball rolled past the cup and continued to roll until it was thirty inches away. Impishly it waited the next move of the hard luck Hogan, who in the previous Masters tournament held here at the Augusta National in 1942 had lost the play-off of a tie with Byron Nelson. A cleancut victory had escaped him, but now only that thirty-inch uphill putt lay be- tween Hogan and a chance to demolish Keiser in a sudden death play-off on the morrow. Movie cameras whirred, but when he missed that putt, again on the right side of the cup, Hogan was blaming nothing but the diabolic ingenuity of man in in- venting golf and, of course, of again using him as one of its horrible examples. In a sort of apology for letting his back- running colleagues down, Hogan came to the press box to explain and to remark behind his hand that »golf is the most disappointing and humiliating game ever invented by man». The tall man with the look of a guy who has known great sorrow sat in the Augusta Fyra berömda spelare pratar pnttar, sedan de klarat första ronden i Masters Tournament.
